WF Pride: Discipline and Accountability

Walther Farms Nebraska Potato Field

Let’s be honest here, we all know we should eat healthier foods, eat smaller portions, drink more water, eliminate sugary drinks, exercise regularly and get the right amount of sleep.  Then why don’t we do it?  If we know what the better choice is, why do we choose the donut over the apple?  Why the Coke over the bottled water?  Why the Oreos over the trail mix?  I’m like most folks out there – I make the wrong choice more than I do the right one.  Currently, Walther Farms, along with many other companies around the country, is heading down the road of a company wellness plan.  Financial incentives, activity challenges, motivational articles and ‘The Biggest Loser’ are all just a means to an end – to get people to live healthy, happy lives.  And as mentioned earlier, it all boils down to choices.

Discipline is a series of choices.  Are you disciplined enough to make the right choices over and over.   Discipline is sacrificing what you want now, for something of lasting value later.  By eating healthy and exercising, the results are usually good health, less visits to the doctor, and a longer life than those that do not.  The concept of discipline can be applied to all areas of our life.  Whatever you are struggling with or want to change in your life can be hard to change if you’re attempting to fix it alone.  I recommend a partner to help hold you accountable – maybe it’s your spouse, or good friend.  Maybe it’s a mentor at work, or maybe a men’s or women’s group at your church.

The same can also be said about our relationship with God.  Are you disciplined in reading the bible on a regular basis?  Do you pray daily?  Are you in Church regularly?  Are you willing to sacrifice eternal, lasting rewards from our Heavenly Father, for short term, earthly satisfactions that fade away?

2 Corinthians 5:10 – For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.

1 Corinthians 9:25 – All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize.

“Dear Lord and Heavenly Father, help us to be disciplined in the things that really matter in this life.   Help us find the right accountability partner that will help us make good, disciplined choices.    It’s in the name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.”
